Whittaker extends Norwich stay
In a surprise turn of events, Norwich City have confirmed that veteran defender Steven Whittaker has extended his contract with the club for a further year as the Canaries start to plan for life in the Championship next season.
The news comes as a bit of a shock given Whittaker’s lack of game time this season, coinciding with the fact that when he has played, he’s not exactly covered himself in any glory.
I’m over the moon to stay here, I’ve really enjoyed my four years. The manager spoke to me towards the end of the season and said it was a frustrating season for myself, but he reminded me what a great job I’d done for him in the Championship and he believes I can do that again.
With Norwich signing Ivo Pinto just months ago in the January transfer window in an attempt to fill the void at right-back, the news certainly does come as a shock.
Of course, the 31-year-old’s experience of the Championship will come in handy and he will be a good player to have around the squad, but questions have been raised for a while now as to whether or not he is up to the standard that Norwich require.
I’m here, in the squad and ready to get to work again to battle for my place.
Whittaker’s deal runs up to the end of next season, with an option to extend the deal for a further year.
